Meet Debbie!! A 2010 Ford Transit Connect I built out for my Industrial Design degree thesis project this spring. The concept was focused on 2 main questions…

How can I provide the opportunity for the time limited, budget minded weekend warrior to experience the comfort of a custom converted van on a frequent basis without compromising their vehicle’s day-to-day functionality?

In addition, how can I provide and facilitate the excitement that comes from the tactility of building out one’s own vehicle?

The person I had in mind while designing this build out have the following characteristics…

-a user who wants to both use their van for work/utility/passengers and for play/recreation/overnight excursions

-a user who wants to live in a van with the capability of on-the-go adaptability

-a user who likes working with their hands, but doesn’t have the time, money, or skills to build their own van out

Made up of heavy-duty welded steel frame and birch ply, “build out box”(the brand I created for the build out) can be installed and uninstalled in under ten minutes, thereby preserving your the Transit Connect’s hauling and cargo capabilities. The collapsible, removable, and rearrangeable nature of the build makes it adaptable to anything both everyday life and life on the road will throw at you.

Check out the official project website and a video of how it works here: https://www.buildoutbox.com/
